‘성도의 견인(Of the Perseverance of the Saints)’에 관한 웨스트민스터 신앙고백의 가르침
1. 하나님께서 자신의 사랑하시는 자 안에서 기쁘게 받으시고 자신의 영으로 효력있게 부르시고 거룩하게 하신 사람들은 은혜의 상태에서 떨어져 전적으로 또한 최종적으로 타락할 수 없다. 오히려 마지막까지 은혜의 상태 안에서 확실히 견디어 낼 것이며, 영원히 구원을 받을 것이다.
I. They whom God hath accepted in his Beloved, effectually called and sanctified by his Spirit, can neither totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace; but shall certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eternally saved.
2. 이와 같은 성도의 견인은 자신들의 자유의지에 달린 것이 아니다. 그것은 하나님 아버지의 값없이 주시며 변함이 없는 사랑에서 흘러나오는 선택의 작정의 불변성에, 예수 그리스도의 공로와 간구의 유효성에, 또한 성령 하나님과 하나님의 씨가 그들 안에 내내 거하심에, 그리고 은혜 언약의 본질에 달린 것이다. 또한 이 모든 것들에서부터 성도의 견인의 확실성과 무오성이 일어난다.
II. This perseverance of the saints depends, not upon their own freewill, but upon the immutability of the decree of election, flowing from the free and unchangeable love of God the Father; upon the efficacy of the merit and intercession of Jesus Christ; the abiding of the Spirit and of the seed of God within them; and the nature of the covenant of grace: from all which ariseth also the certainty and infallibility thereof.
3. 그럼에도 성도들은 사단과 세상의 시험으로 말미암아, 그들 안에 남아 있는 부패의 힘으로 인해, 또한 그들을 보존하는 방편들을 등한시함으로써, 중대한 죄에 빠질 수가 있으며, 얼마 동안 그 안에 거하기도 한다. 그리하여 그들은 하나님의 진노를 일으키고 성령 하나님을 근심케 함으로, 어느 정도의 은혜와 위로를 빼앗기게 되며, 그들의 심령이 굳어지고, 양심이 상처를 입게 된다. 또한 다른 사람들에게 상처를 주고 그들로 하여금 걸려 넘어지게 하며, 스스로 현세에서 받는 심판을 자초하게 된다.
III. Nevertheless they may, through the temptations of Satan and of the world, the prevalency of corruption remaining in them, and the neglect of the means of their preservation, fall into grievous sins; and for a time continue therein: whereby they incur God's displeasure, and grieve his Holy Spirit; come to be deprived of some measure of their graces and comforts; have their hearts hardened, and their consciences wounded; hurt and scandalize others, and bring temporal judgments upon themselves.
